Adiantum capillus-veneris ‘Southern Maidenhair Fern’ is known for its lacy, delicate and dainty foliage. The stems of this plant are dark with light green leaves, making for great contrast. It will grow 6” to 12” tall when mature, but could be kept pruned to an even smaller size. It spreads by sending out green rhizomorphic projections from the base of the plant outward over the top of the soil that will start a new plant next to it. This fern is listed as an endangered species in North Carolina, where it is mostly referred to as the Southern Maidenhair. It is called the Venus Hair Fern where it is listed at a threatened status in Kentucky. This fern is mostly found in the lower half of the United States and some parts of the tropics. As a result, this fern prefers very moist, humus rich soil, as moderate to high water needs, and appreciates shaded to partly shaded areas.
USDA Hardiness Zones 7-10
This small, moderate to slow growing fern is a great container garden or small terrarium plant. However, it will get too large for most small container gardens unless pruned often.
Josh's Frogs offers a wide variety of glass terrariums, container garden soils, drainage layers and other supplies for all of your indoor gardening needs.
The Southern Maidenhair Fern is an excellent choice and does great in the humid environment of a vivarium, and due to its potential 12” growing size, it should be placed towards the back areas. It can also easily be pruned to a smaller size if deemed necessary. Air flow is not required, but it would appreciate it, as with most ferns. With its delicate texture and light green lacy foliage, this fern makes a great accent plant while providing a lot of hiding places in your vivarium for various fauna.
As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home. Live plants from Josh's Frogs are treated only with products that are OMRI Listed© for use in organic production. Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance.
