Dionaea muscipula (Venus Fly Trap) 'King Henry' is a cultivar of the well known carnivorous plant, the Venus Fly Trap. This fascinating plant is native to the low-nutrient wetlands on the eastern coast of the United States. Dionaea muscipula 'King Henry' has tall growing, larger sized traps with bright green color, making it one of the most popular varieties. Their trap size can exceed 1.75” in length and the plants reach an average of 5” high.

Each trap of the Venus Fly Trap plant emits sweet smelling odors and has sensitive hairs inside that will trigger the trap to snap shut when disturbed, trapping the insect/arachnid inside to be digested over the following week. Each trap only opens and closes a few times before it will die off and grow a new one. For this reason, it is important to not “false trigger” the traps and make them shut for no reason, as it will only stress out the plant with no benefit. It is also important to never fertilize a Venus Fly Trap, as that would be fatal to the plant, due to them being native to low-nutrient soils. Venus Fly Traps get all of the nutrients they need to survive from feeding on insects, but will also survive on photosynthesis alone. We do not “feed” the carnivorous plants at our facility. We simply provide them with saturated R/O water and ample lighting. Since they are a bog plant, they must be kept constantly saturated, which can be easily achieved by always leaving some water sitting in a saucer under the pot.

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:

Venus Fly Traps will do well in a moderate-high light terrarium or container garden.  It also makes a great houseplant provided that the soil remains wet enough. Venus Fly Traps have high water needs and should be planted in a good quality, well draining carnivorous plant soil.  This plant is most commonly a house plant, where it is often seen in a kitchen window sill where it will help keep indoor flies under control while also receiving ample sunlight.

Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:

Josh's Frogs does not recommend keeping Venus Fly Traps with animals. Animals will disturb the plant, and these repeated disturbances will eventually lead to the demise of the plant. Venus Fly Traps also requires a winter dormancy period to thrive, which cannot be easily provided in a vivarium.

As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home. Live plants from Josh's Frogs are treated only with products that are OMRI Listed© for use in organic production. Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance.
