Phlebodium pseudoaureum, also known as the Blue Rabbit’s Foot Fern, or the Virginia Blue Fern, is a fairly large growing fern. While the rhizomes in which it spreads stay small, the leaves that sprout from these rhizomes can grow quite large - up to 10” long! Along with the Black Rabbit’s Foot Fern and White Rabbit’s Foot Fern, the Blue Rabbit’s Foot fern gets its name from the rhizomes that spread outward from the plant on top of the soil. As the rhizomes grow out from the plant, new leaves will sprout from it along the way. Some prefer to let them naturally grow outward and all over the rim of the pot, while some prefer to train them to grow certain directions. Because of its large leaf size, along with the unique blue leaf color and shape, the blue rabbit’s foot fern is a popular fern for both vivarium and plant lovers alike. As most ferns, it does not prefer direct light.

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:

This plant does great in pots for a house plant as long as the soil is kept evenly moist. Likewise, it will do fine in any terrarium. It’s leaves will get much too large for most small container gardens.

Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:

The Blue Rabbit’s Foot Ferns is popular for vivarium use due to its unique foliage. Due to the size of these leaves, it is best planted near the background of the vivarium or terrarium. If placed in an animal terrarium, be sure to keep it well watered. These plants seem to drink a lot of water when not kept in a constantly moist vivarium.
