About This Product

Sarracenia purpurea 'Venosa Red' is a cultivar of the carnivorous plant called the Pitcher Plant that features cup-shaped pitchers with purple-red veins and coloration mixed with younger, light green pitchers, making it both interesting and beautiful. It can reach approximately 6" tall and can hold a good amount of water in its pitchers.

Each pitcher of the pitcher plant emits sweet smelling odors from nectar on the rim that will attract insects inside to be digested in the reservoir over the following week when they fall in. It is important to never fertilize a pitcher plant, as that would be fatal to the plant, due to them being native to low-nutrient soils. They get all of the nutrients they need to survive from feeding on insects, but will also survive on photosynthesis alone. We do not “feed” the carnivorous plants at our facility. We simply provide them with saturated R/O water and ample lighting. Since they are a bog plant, they must be kept constantly saturated, which can be easily achieved by always leaving some water sitting in a saucer under the pot.

USDA Hardiness Zones 7-9

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:

Pitcher Plants will do well in a moderate-high light terrarium or container garden.  It also makes a great houseplant provided that the soil remains wet enough. Pitcher Plants have high water needs and should be planted in a good quality, well draining carnivorous plant soil.  This plant is most commonly a house plant, where it is often seen in a kitchen window sill where it will help keep indoor flies under control while also receiving ample sunlight.

Josh's Frogs offers a wide variety of glass terrariums, container garden soils, drainage layers and other supplies for all of your indoor gardening needs.

Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:

Josh's Frogs does not recommend keeping Pitcher Plants with animals due to their high water saturation needs being unhealthy to most other vivarium plants and animals. Pitcher Plants also requires a winter dormancy period to thrive, which cannot be easily provided in a vivarium.

As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home. Live plants from Josh's Frogs are treated only with products that are OMRI Listed© for use in organic production. Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance.

Wow

I received this plant the other day. Wow! This is a gorgeous pitcher plant!! It came in a 2' pot and has new roots on it already. Looks better in person if that is possible.
