About This Product

 Defining Characteristics:

  • Mid-sized, grumpy gecko
  • Nocturnal
  • Active hunters
  • Easy to keep and breed
  • Semi-terrestrial

NameParoedura stumpffi. Known as stumpff’s ground gecko. Despite this common name, they do enjoy climbing--though adults are not very adept since they cannot support their own weight very well when climbing on anything but very rough surfaces.

Recommended Enclosure Size: A pair of stumpff’s ground geckos can be kept in a12x12x12 enclosure. A male can be housed with multiple females, but males should never be housed together.Coco fiber-based substrates work best for this species and should be kept moist (but not wet). These geckos are terrestrial but enjoy climbing as well. While juveniles are adept at climbing,, adults are not good at supporting their own weight while climbing, so climbing material should not exceed 10-12 inches in height to avoid injuries. Cork bark and other rough material works especially well for climbing material. Cork tubes or half-tubes work well as hides.Leaf litter can also provide numerous hiding places.

Temperature: Keep ground geckos between 72-78 F. If warmer stable temperatures are maintained, a basking spot is not necessary. If provided, the basking spot should not exceed 90 F and maintained with an undertank heater or basking bulb. Temperatures should be monitored with adigital thermometer, and the basking spot can be checked with aninfrared thermometer or temperature gun. Night temperatures should not fall below 70 F. UV light is not required but is not harmful if provided.

Humidity: Keep ground geckos at 55-65% ambient humidity. Live plants can be added to help create humid microclimates. Ambient humidity should be monitored with adigital hygrometer. These geckos should be misted daily or every other day to provide dew on enclosure walls and cage items from which they can drink, but enough ventilation should be provided to allow the enclosure to dry out after a few hours. A shallowwater dish can be provided but is not necessary with regular misting.

Size: Stumpff’s ground geckos are a mid-sized species, reaching around 4-5 inches from head to tail as adults.

Age: Ground geckos are at least 4 weeks old when sold by Josh’s Frogs, at which time they are well established. It is estimated that these geckos live for 8-10 years in captivity.

Feeding: Juvenile ground geckos sold by Josh’s Frogs are feda staple of ¼-inch crickets. Juveniles have a notably strong appetite and should be offered ample prey, although this declines with age. Adults should be fed a staple of ½-inch crickets, but can also be offeredblack soldier fly larvae and dubia roaches. All feeder insects should be gutloaded and dusted withvitamin/mineral supplements, and can be offered in a food dish.

Sexing: Stumpff’s ground geckos are easily sexed as males exhibit a conspicuous bulge at the base of the tail.

Color/Pattern: Juveniles are light brown in color with beige bands along their body. They exhibit a conspicuous red tail, which turns brown and becomes patterned with age. Adults are brown with dark brown to black patterns along their back. Individuals also have a light-colored line that extends to the tail. Most notable are their sharp-looking tubercled scales, giving them a spiny appearance.

Social Behavior: Females can be housed together. Males can be grouped with multiple females, but no more than one male should be in an enclosure. We have had most success keeping them in pairs or trios.

Breeding: Females will bury two eggs every 3-4 weeks in the substrate. Providing a small dish of extra calcium in the enclosure is recommended for breeders.

Natural Range: Stumpff’s ground geckos are found in subtropical to tropical areas in northwestern and northern Madagascar.

History in the Hobby: Paroedura stumpffi are not common in the hobby, and we’re very excited to have the opportunity to breed them and make captive bred individuals more accessible!
