About This Product

SPECIAL NOTE: USPS forbids shipping venomous spiders or scorpions in the mail.

Because of this, we ship these animals FedEx priority overnight for a flat fee of $39.99.

Defining Characteristics:

  • Arboreal species that originates from Trinidad
  • Primarily arboreal, though slings behave more similarly to ground-dwelling species
  • Can be fast and quick to act defensively.
  • Can reach full size in about two years
  • An oldie but a goodie—this species has existed in the pet trade for decades and is considered one of the original tarantulas in the trade

Name: The Trinidad Chevron Tarantula is scientifically known as Psalmopoeus cambridgei. It's also sometimes called the Trinidad Chevron Tree Spider.

Recommended Enclosure Size & Setup: Being a primarily arboreal species, the height of your enclosure will be more important than the length or width. A 12x12x18 glass terrarium should be large enough for an adult of this species. Make sure the enclosure has a secure mesh top to allow for ventilation.

Josh's Frogs sells a variety of tarantula kits that make setup and care simple!

Although they are arboreal, slings can often be seen making burrows and tunnels up the side of their enclosure, so they would benefit from at least a little bit of substrate depth. ABG mixcoco cradle, or Dig-It are good substrate options, but our Pet Bug Team prefers ABG all the way!

If you want to use a clean-up crew of springtails and isopods, or if you want to use live plants, we recommend Josh's Frogs Tropical BioBedding.

For this species, vertical pieces of vivarium wood are required to imitate the trees that these spiders live on in the wild. Cork is an excellent choice as it doesn’t promote mold or bacterial growth, and doesn’t break down as easily as other types of wood. Include at least two different pieces of cork bark, and ideally, use a cork bark tube to allow the spider an easy hiding place to feel safe in.

Temperature (°F) & Lighting: thermometer should be present in the enclosure, and temperatures should be kept around 75-80 degrees. This can be accomplished with a low wattage under tank heat pad during colder conditions.

These tarantulas do not require any UV lighting or any heating lamps, just a day-night cycle. Make sure your spider's enclosure doesn't receive too much sunlight—this can cause temperatures to rise rapidly, cooking your spider in its home.

Humidity: These are tropical spiders and require a higher level of humidity. 78-82% relative humidity is ideal for this species. It is recommended that you have a digital hygrometer in your enclosure to monitor these conditions. If the enclosure gets too dry, the tarantula can have difficulty molting, and this can lead to the disfiguring and even death of your spider. To keep conditions humid, keep a small water dish or bottle cap full of water available at all times.

The enclosure can also be misted, but be careful not to mist the spider directly, as this can agitate the spider and result in bites or escape attempts. Misting can be down along the walls of the enclosure so it is absorbed by the substrate. Additionally, you can mist some of the webbing to allow the spider multiple places to get water.

Reverse osmosis, distilled, or spring water can be used. If using tap water, make sure to use a quality water dechlorinator.

Size: At the time of sale, these spiders will have a diagonal legspan of about 3 inch. Adults of this species range from 4-7 inches

Age: Trinidad Chevron tarantulas can be quite long-lived in captivity. Males can live 2-3 years, and females can easily live over a decade if cared for properly.

Feeding: These spiders are currently eating two to three 3/4 inch crickets, once a week. There are a variety of appropriate prey items that you can offer, such as roacheswaxwormsblack soldier fly larvaehornworms, and silkworms. Consider feeding your prey items with our gutload formula to give your pet well-rounded nutrition.

We recommend that the prey items not be much longer than the tarantula's “head” is wide. Larvae are an exception—our larvae are harmless. Since they are very high in fat, they're not the best staple diet, however they make a great weight gain supplement.

Remove uneaten prey items after 24 hours, these may stress your animal out or endanger the spider during molting. Never attempt to feed a freshly molted tarantula less than a week after their molt to prevent injury to the spider. Depending on its age, the hardening process could take anywhere from 48 hours all the way up to a week.

Sexing: Due to age, Trinidad Chevron spiderlings sold by Josh's Frogs are sold as unsexed.

Specimens of 2.5-3 inch diagonal leg span will be able to start being accurately sexed. The most accurate method is always molt sexing, the molt of a female tarantula of appropriate size will have spermatheca and a uterus externus in between the top two sets of book lungs that will appear as a "flap" that will catch and open if a pin is gently run down this section of the old exoskeleton. Males will have a much more plain slit that will not budge with attempts to manipulate it.

Color/Pattern: This species features chevron markings on their abdomen, and a brown or olive coloration.

Social Behavior: Psalmopoeus cambridgei are not social creatures and any attempt to cohabitate will likely result in cannibalism.

This species lacks the urticating hairs that the New World tarantula species generally have. They also lack the potent venom that a lot of Old World species possess. That does not mean that this species is docile, or handleable! This species can be very aggressive, and their bites can range from irritating to medically significant if you are susceptible to the venom.

Natural Range: This tarantula is an arboreal species native to the tropical island of Trinidad.

Beautiful Tarantula

I love the Josh's Frogs team! Let's talk about a beautiful tarantula. My daughter named hers Luna. Luna is stunning! The stripes are well defined and the peach color really pops. Luna is docile but can be skittish. Good news, she has become very chill, very quickly. The reason I bring up the skittish nature is due to the speed of this species. So fast that you need to anticipate and an escape attempt if your T feels stress leading to a fight or flight response. Be prepared every time to open the habitat. I am a frog guy but the Trinidad Chevron is an excellent small pet!
