Selaginella uncinata 'Peacock Spikemoss'-

Selaginella uncinata ‘Peacock Spikemoss’ is not a true moss but rather a type of lycophyte, which are the oldest living vascular plants that date back to 410 million years ago, making them somewhat prehistoric and unlike most plants by design.  It is native to Southern China.  This shrub-like tropical plant has uniquely iridescent green and bronze, scaly, coarse foliage that tends to trail upwards and out, creating a nice groundcover.  It appreciates part shade, high humidity, and constantly moist, humus soil.  This plant rarely exceeds 2-3” in height and does not prefer direct and intense light, as it will quickly scorch and perish. Peacock Spikemoss is also hardy outdoors and looks great in rock gardens with bright metallic blue foliage in the summer and copper/bronze color in the fall.

USDA Hardiness Zones 6-10

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant:

Selaginellas can do well as a houseplant as long as the humidity is not too low, as they appreciate high humidity and they can be kept in a hanging basket to trail over the sides, much like a fern.  Their small foliage makes them a great candidate for container gardens as well, again, only if it is kept humid enough.

Josh's Frogs offers a wide variety of glass terrariums, container garden soils, drainage layers and other supplies for all of your indoor gardening needs.

Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:

This is continually one of our best sellers for vivariums.  Being tropical, this plant does great in the high moisture environment of a well-drained vivarium.  It will expand to create a great groundcover that can be trimmed if necessary.  It should be placed in the foreground of the vivarium and will provide great groundcover for most fauna with its wiry, bushy foliage.

As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home. Plants from Josh’s Frogs are specifically grown to be safe for use with animals. Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance.

The plant pictured is in a 2.25" pot.

Came in a little brown but hoping for the best! Review by Berto

Very pretty Review by Ty
Tiny, adorable leaves with an amazing coloration.
Separated it into quite a few small clumps, which all seem to be establishing and doing great. Sprinkled a little soil over the tops to give the roots something to cling to, and now (about a week and a half later) I have lots sprigs of foliage shooting out from all over the planted terrarium substrate.
Can't wait for all of the clumps to fully establish and form a ground cover. (Posted on 2/26/2016)
great colors Review by David
great looking groundcover plant, it isnt too dense so microfauna and small frogs have no problem moving through it, but it still does a good job adding some depth to wherever you place it (Posted on 2/8/2016)
