  • Originates from Trinidad and Tobago
  • Generally docile but very fast
  • Can reach full size in about two years

Name: Cyriocosmus elegans: the name seems to translate to “Cyrio-” main, “-cosmus” space, and “elegans” elegant. Thus it is the elegant main space tarantula. The common name refers to the striping on its abdomen and one of the two countries it most frequently occurs from. Surprisingly, neither name references the red marking prominently displayed on the center of its upper abdomen for which it has earned the nickname “heart-butt” tarantula at Josh’s Frogs.

Recommended Enclosure Size: As its name suggests, the Trinidad Dwarf Tiger is not a large tarantula and so does not require a great deal of space. A 2.5gal terrarium with 3” of substrate will more than accommodate the needs of this species. A hide, such as a piece of cork bark, and a small water dish should also be included.

Temperature: 78-83°F

Humidity: 70-80%

Size: At least .25”. Grows up to 2”.

Age: 5-7 years. Males live somewhat shorter than females but both mature in about 12 months.

Feeding: Drosophila melanogaster. As it grows, so should its prey. Prey items should be no larger than the size of the spider’s abdomen. Remove uneaten prey items: these may endanger the spider during molting. Spiderlings can be fed as frequently as they are willing to eat but should be fed at least twice a week otherwise.

Sexing: To identify a male or female before it has reached sexual maturity you will need to examine its cast skin which in females will have a folded area in the abdominal region which will eventually connect to her spermatheca when she is mature.Due to their age, Trinidad Dwarf Tiger Tarantulas sold by Josh's Frogs are sold as unsexed animals.

Color/Pattern: The cephalothorax of the Trinidad Dwarf Tiger is mostly copper red with a triangular section in black towards its eyes and mouthparts. Its abdomen is primarily black with a heart shaped spot on its upper side roughly the same color as its cephalothorax. The abdomen also bares three parallel whitish “tiger stripes” on its sides. The spider’s femur is black while the remainder of the leg is the same whitish color as its stripes.

Social Behavior: This tarantula should be kept singly.

Breeding: When breeding Trinidad Dwarf Tigers, it is best to plan it for about one month after the female molts. If a molt follows the pairing before eggs can be laid, the reproductive material contributed by the male will be discarded in the process. The female should also be well fed prior to the paring. If successful the female will eventually construct an egg sac which should be removed about four weeks after for incubation.

Natural Range: Venezuela, Trinidad, and Tobago.
