About This Product

LIVE ARRIVAL GUARANTEED if your temps fall within our LAG (read here). Please check your temps before ordering!

Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae are a great feeder for a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and invertebrates. High in calcium, black soldier fly larvae are also known in the trade as Phoenix Worms, ReptiWorms, and CalciWorms. Each container of Black Soldier Fly Larvae - 1000 count Large will contain at least 1000 soldier fly larvae ready to feed out as soon as they arrive. Large Black Soldier Fly Larvae measure approximately 1/2" - 3/4", and make perfect feeders for bearded dragons, chameleons, leopard geckos, fat tail geckos, and many insectivorous invertebrates.

How to Feed:

Feed soldier fly larvae with tongs, or in a dish. Be careful not to allow solder fly larvae to escape the dish - the larvae will burrow and pupate into adult flies. After they pupate, the larvae emerge as adult black soldier flies, which resemble small wasps. Even though they look intimidating, black soldier flies are harmless. Once the worms began to pupate (if they're not eaten by them), they'll turn black. At this stage, the larvae contain a LOT of calcium, and should be quickly fed to your pets.

How to Store:

Soldier Fly Larvae can be kept at room temperature, but keeping them at 55-65F will keep them in the larval stage much longer. Remember, black soldier fly larvae can still be fed out after they pupate. Adult flies can also be fed out - chameleons in particular seem to love these!

Arrived alive!

I like ordering from Josh's Frog. Insects always arrived alive and in good condition. I'm switching over from crickets to BSFL because Tad absolutely loves these as worms and flies, and they're nutritious for him. I ordered the 1000 ct and put some in the fridge so they should last longer than crickets and they don't smell.

Just got my live insects

I just got another package. My insects were packaged well and all alive. Much better quality than I got from the pet stores.

Great!

I’ve ordered from other online feeder companies, but Josh’s is the best by far. They packaged my BSFL with great care, always healthy and last longer than most companies. I love that they ship in soil rather than shavings. You can transfer the container when most have turned black, and about to morph, and they turn into flies with the soil substrate. They can then be fed to bearded dragons! Helps in between ordering shipments and making sure my baby doesn’t starve. Highly recommend! Great customer service as well!

Semi-Automatic Feeding

I purchased 1000 large BSFL on June 2, 2019. I put a small dime sized hole in the lid of the container and placed it into my veiled chameleon’s enclosure and waited. Once in a while a larva or two would find their way out. Picasso would eat them. Perfect, because they are an excellent source of protein and calcium. Now, almost one month later (6/29/2019) the flies are emerging from the container 15-30 per day. My chameleon loves hunting these! We call them “sky raisins”. Picasso is ignoring his crickets and super worms the last couple of days. They are still a great source of protein and calcium as flies, so no power dusting necessary! This makes putting a container in for vacation an excellent idea - especially if your pet sitter is a little squeamish about insects. I’ll be ordering some extra small ones soon to add into this container!
