Name: Eublepharis macularius. Known as the leopard gecko for the yellow color and spotting characteristic of wild-type adults.

Recommended Enclosure Size & Setup: A single adult should be provided with at least a 24x18x12 glass enclosure.

Numerous substrates can be used with success. Paper towels provide an easily replaceable substrate. Loose substrate like Dig-It or sand (do not use calcium or vitamin-based sands) can be used so long as it is spot cleaned; impaction is a minimal risk provided proper hydration, basking temperatures, as well as a cup of calcium in the enclosure to minimize substrate consumption.

Desert BioBedding with isopods (dwarf whites or dairy cows or giant canyons all work well), springtails, and succulents can be used to create a beautiful and bioactive arid enclosure! The best setup involves multiple hides placed on both the warm side and cool side of the enclosure, as well as at least one humid hide.

Temperature (°F): Keep leopard geckos between 75-85°. A basking spot of around 90-95° is necessary and can be provided using an under-tank heat pad (placed on the outside of the enclosure) with a thermostat or an over-tank heating bulb. Heat rocks should not be used.

Ambient temperatures should be monitored with a digital thermometer, and the basking spot should be monitored with an infrared temperature monitor. A basking spot is not required at night (enclosure temperatures are ideally cooler at night), but night temperatures should not fall below 65 degrees. UVB is not required for this nocturnal species but can still be provided.

Humidity: Keep leopard geckos on the dry side, around 40-50% humidity. Leopard gecko enclosures should have ample ventilation. Ambient humidity should be monitored with a digital hygrometer.

Providing a humid microclimate in the from of a humid hide is important to facilitate shedding, and this is easily done by creating an enclosed space containing moist sphagnum moss, or wetting down substrate underneath a hide. A shallow water dish is recommended. The enclosure can be misted one to three times a week, but should have enough air flow to dry out with a couple of hours.

Size: Leopard geckos hatch fairly large at 3-4 inches. These Bell Sunglow leos will measure from 6 to 9 inches in length, and weigh at least 30 grams at the time of sale. Adults range from 7-10 inches long from head to tail.

Age: Provided proper husbandry, leopard geckos can live anywhere between 10-20 years in captivity. These geckos are well-established adults.

Although these animals are old enough to be sexed, they are sold as unsexed adults.

Feeding: Leopard geckos are insectivores and will thrive on a varied diet of feeder insects. These leos can easily eat 1 inch adult crickets or roaches, which should be provided in a feeding dish.

Leopard geckos can also feed on a staple of superworms or mealworms. Waxworms, butterworms, and small hornworms make excellent treats, but should only be offered occasionally. Feeder insects should be gutloaded and dusted with a calcium and multivitamin supplement. 

Sexing: Leopard geckos are easy to sex as males will exhibit conspicuous hemipenal bulges at the base of their tail. Although these animals are sexable, they are sold as unsexed adults.

Color/Pattern: Hatchling leopard geckos are yellow with dark brown to black banding, with a white tail that is also banded. As they grow, they will exhibit different patterning and coloration depending on the morph you choose. 

The animal pictured above is an example of the animal you will receive. Body color ranges from orangish yellow to orange. Specimens display varying amounts of “Carrot tail” (orange on the tail). This morph can have varying amounts of light spotting or no spots.

Social Behavior: Josh's Frogs recommends housing leopard geckos separately. Groups can be maintained successfully with large, specialized setups, but within a small setup, it’s best to keep them alone, although a couple of adult females can often be housed together within at least a 20+ gallon enclosure.

Always keep an eye on animals housed in groups, and separate if necessary.

Breeding: During the breeding season, leopard geckos will lay 2 large eggs once every 3-4 weeks. It’s important to provide breeding females with plenty of food and calcium. Placing a male with a female temporarily (up to a week or two) is a good practice for breeding, as separating them out afterwards allows the female to produce eggs without harassment for continuous breeding; females can produce multiple clutches after only one mating event.

Natural Range: Leopard geckos are found in southern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India.

History in the Hobby: Leopard geckos are extremely common in the hobby due to their well-deserved reputation as an excellent beginner lizard.
